Ceiling Mounting a Television in the home
When mounting a television, there's no need to limit your experience to spaces on your wall.
Ceiling mounted televisions are generally thought of as a retail or commercial application, however in the right home situation not only look attractive, but can provide a range of benefits that you may not have thought.
Getting off the ground
First and foremost, a ceiling mounted television can be more out of reach than wall methods. Walls on newer built houses can be lower than older builds, yet if your ceiling is sloped you then have the advantage to gain extra feet from the floor. This can also add to the security and safety, as your TV is more difficult to get to.
Unsuitable walls
TV mounts can accommodate most types of walls, but if you're faced with an ideal position against a window or glass wall, mounting on the ceiling solves the problem. Likewise, ceiling mounting can position a TV further from locations such as fireplaces.
Unusual areas
Rooms such as kitchens or bathrooms are great places for televisions, but cabinets, tiles and shelves don't make available space. Ceiling mounting allows you to set your TV in almost any place you choose.
Cabling issues
Solid walls can present a number of problems in hiding cabling between the television unit and the power source. With ceiling mounting, cables can be directed straight into the ceiling space without the need for conduit.
What to look for
Once you've made the decision to ceiling mount your television, it's critical to choose the correct type:
- Maximum display weight – ensure that your television can be adequately supported by your mount and that the ceiling structure is strong enough to support both TV and Mount
- VESA mounting pattern – this refers to the mounting holes on the rear of your TV. To confirm this, check your installation instructions or manufacturer's website.
- Pole length – high ceilings may require a pole of over 75 inches.
- Pole adjustment – one size never fits all, the pole should be able to be extended to varying lengths
- Tilt – ensure your mount can allow your television to tilt down to 25 degrees
- Cable management – ideally cables should be able to be tucked into the pole
- Ceiling angles – not all ceiling mounts can accommodate a sloped ceiling
